A Study on the Status of Maternal and Child Health in Rural Area


Abstract
From June 1977 to September 1977 a survey was carried out by public nursing aids with questionnaires to 585 households selected randomly in Songak township and Youmchi township of Asian county, Chungnam province.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. The mean marital age of mothers was 22.7 years old and the mean number of living children in each household was 3.0.
2. The educational status of mothers was mostly of primary school.
3. The overall rate of birth registration for the last child showed 92.8% with 75.9% of those being registered within the first month after birth.
4. The rate of overall home delivery was accounted in 93.6% with 62.4% of those being attended by the mother-in-law and 11. 7% being attended by medical personnel.
5. Of the mothers, 96.6¡Æo experienced an easy delivery. Breech delivery and prolon¡þged labor were mostly accounted for the difficult deliveries.
6. About 28% of mothers took some drugs during pregnancy of which 27.2% got aspirin, 13.6% digestives, and 11.4% antibiotics.
The rate of nutrients taken showed 34.7% with the types of nutrients being iron (36.7%), calcium(26.6%), vitamin(21.4%), oriental herbs(16.9%), and etc.
7. Of the mothers, 37.9% complained discomfort during pregnancy, such as morning sickness, dizziness, and edema.
Vaginal hemorrhage, convulsion, and hypertension were found in 11.2% of the cases. 8. Most women experienced 2 or 3 pregnancies with the mean being 3.3 times.
9. Of the mothers, 11. 3% experienced spontaneous abortion and 17.1% experienced
induced abortion.
10. When the birth was attended by non-medical personnel, the tool most commonly used for cutting of umbilcal cord was scissors.
Boiling(47.8%) was the most popular sterilization method while 28.3% of the cases did not use any sterilization.
11. The disease of the children occurring within the last one year were mostly accounted
in respiratory disease (43. 8%) and gastroir testinal disease (26.7%). The rate of sericus diseases such as meningitis, congenital heart disease, leukemia were accounted in 1.2%.
12. The hospitalization rate of the child was shown to be 1. 3%. The major reasons of hospitalization were due to tetanus(21%), meningitis(15.8%), and convulsion(15.8%), most of which belonged to infectious disease.
13. The incidence of accidents showed highest in age group of 1-3 year(63. 6%) and lowest in that of less than 1 year(6. 8%). The major causes of accidents showed burns (34.1%), injury (29. 5% ), traffic accidents(13.6%), and falls(13.6%). The mortality rate revealed 11. 4% and the accidental causes of death were mainly originated from traffic accidents and drowning.
14. The highest mortality rate was seen in the 1 month age group. The causes of death were from convulsion, tetanus, pneumonia, in order of frequency.
15. Of the last children, 84.6% were nursed with breast feeding during the 4 months of age and the rate of nutrients intake showed 53. 8% of which 80%were encountered vitamins.
